Sound imprints
The sound prints are sounds equivalent to the reference points on a map. They are key sound objects that help us to orient ourselves within a sound landscape. Often the sound prints are also fundamental sounds (tonic), but not always. Think of giving directions. We use reference points to describe where we are or how to get to a place. “Go down to the shops, turn left and you’ll find ‘X’ . ” In this example ‘shops’ are a reference point. They function as fixed reference points around which movements and navigation can take place. The sound prints are exactly the same in the sound dimension. They are key reference sounds that help us orient ourselves in the soundscape; for example:“When you hear the seagulls you know you have reached the sea”
Sound marks are the sonic equivalent of landmarks. They are key sound objects within a soundscape which help us orient ourselves. Sometimes Sound Marks are also Keynote sounds, but not always. Think of giving directions. We are looking forward to seeing you where we are or how to get somehwere. “Go down to the shops, turn left and you will find ‘X'” In this example ‘the shops’ are the landmark. They act as a fixed point of reference around which the navigation can happen. Soundmarks are exactly the same for sounds. They are key sonic points of reference that help us orient ourselves within the soundscape. for example: “You will know that you have reached the seaside”
