They detect vibrations in the air caused by sound waves and convert these into electrical signals, These electrical signals are then passed on to be stored (in the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2.eu\/cs\/encyclopediacs\/recording\" target=\"_self\" title=\"Recording technology allows us to capture sounds and store them so that they can be played back later. Recorded sounds may also be edited.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">recording<\/a>), or fed to <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2.eu\/cs\/encyclopediacs\/loudspeaker\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A loudspeaker is a device designed to reproduce sounds. It takes an electrical signal and coverts it in to sound wave vibrations in the air. The loudspeaker does this through the power of electromagnets, the electrical signal that travels to the loudspeaker is an &lsquo;alternating current&rsquo;, it turns on and off. This, in turn, turns&hellip;\" class=\"encyclopedia\">loudspeaker<\/a>s (which convert the electrical signals back into soundwave vibrations).<\/p>\n<p>There are many different types of microphone, which come in many shapes and sizes, and they often use slightly different <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2.eu\/cs\/encyclopediacs\/techno\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A style of music that developed from the mixture of electronic music and African styles. It is repetitive instrumental music, often with a strong beat. It developed because of the possibilities and availability of samplers and drum machines, with many of the sounds that these machines created being synonymous with the style.\" class=\"encyclopedia\">techno<\/a>logies. Powered &lsquo;condenser microphones&rsquo; and unpowered &lsquo;dynamic microphones&rsquo; are the most common types. With condenser microphones being the more sensitive of the two.<\/p>\n<p>Special tools are also available to record sounds that travel through liquids and through solids. <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2.eu\/cs\/encyclopediacs\/hydrophone\" target=\"_self\" title=\"a&nbsp;Microphone&nbsp;technology designed to record sound waves travelling through liquids. Hydrophones, like contact microphones, use piezoelectric crystals to induce an electrical signal. Hydropones get their name from the Greek words for water (hydra) and sound (phone).\" class=\"encyclopedia\">Hydrophone<\/a>s can record sounds that travel through liquids and are used to record underwater sounds. While <a href=\"https:\/\/ears2.eu\/cs\/encyclopediacs\/contact-microphone\" target=\"_self\" title=\"A simple recording technology that allows sound vibration travelling through solid objects to be detected and recorded. Contact microhpones are made from piezoelectric crystals, which induce an electric current when they are vibrated.
